Italy backs ban on data tracking in political ads, France hesitates
Italy supports a full ban on targeted advertising based on the tracking of users, but France seems to be on the fence with regard to a number of key elements of the proposed regulation on political advertising.
In response to questions posed by the Czech Presidency of the EU Council, Rome has outlined its preference for a “prohibition of targeted advertising based on pervasive tracking” and expressed its support for a total prohibition on “the use of targeting or amplification techniques involving the processing of sensitive data”.
The questions are based on the Commission’s proposed regulation, released last year, with the aim of increasing transparency in political advertising and tackling the presence of disinformation, particularly at election times. The EU executive’s aim is to have the measures in place by the next European Parliament elections, scheduled for May 2024.
