EDPB Meets Commissioner McGrath to Discuss GDPR Priorities
The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) recently held a plenary meeting with Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection. The meeting focused on shared priorities and ongoing work in data protection and digital regulation. Key topics included the Digital Omnibus, where the EDPB stressed the importance of maintaining strong protections for personal data despite proposed amendments, emphasizing the need to balance innovation with fundamental rights.
Cross-regulatory cooperation was also a major point of discussion. Both the Commissioner and the EDPB explored ways to enhance collaboration across regulatory bodies to keep pace with the fast-evolving digital landscape. The protection of children’s data was highlighted, with the EDPB currently developing guidelines and participating in the European Commission’s Special Panel on Child Safety Online.
The EDPB also discussed progress on political advertising regulations, focusing on guidelines for processing personal data in political ads to ensure transparency and accountability. International data transfers and cooperation with third countries were addressed, underscoring the need for global efforts to uphold data protection standards. Adequate funding and staffing for Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) were emphasized as critical for effective enforcement.
