TikTok to take additional measures to keep the youngest off the platform
TikTok committed themselves to taking new measures on the Italian market that will enhance those already in place to prevent the youngest from accessing their platform. The measures deployed by Tik Tok following the urgent decisions by the Italian data protection authority Garante led to significant results, which however the Garante did not consider to be enough given the importance of the interests at stake.
From the 9th of February – when the ban imposed by the Garante took effect – to the 21st of April, over 12.5 million Italian users were asked to confirm that they were aged above 13 years in order to access the platform, and over 500,000 accounts were removed after being traced to users likely to be aged under 13 – either because the users had declared to be so (about 400,000) or because they had been reported to be below the age threshold thanks to the new in-app reporting tools implemented by the company or had been spotted by the moderators (about 140,000).
