Europe-wide overhaul of GDPR monitoring triggered by ICCL
Following the pressure by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL), the European Commission has conceded to launching routine assessments of all “large-scale” GDPR cases across Europe.
Previously, ICCL had rebuked the lack of GDPR enforcement directed towards Big Tech as well as the European Commission’s negligence in surveilling the practice of GDPR.
In response, the European Commission is now exercising their authority and will be rigorously auditing each consequential procedure in large-scale GDPR cases, compiling information about the period a process takes coupled with the actions taken by relevant data protection authorities. The Commission has pledged to carry out these procedures six times a year.
The origin of this major development can be traced back to September 2021 when ICCL igniting awareness around an extensive EU-wide “data deficit”, later encouraging the European Commission to regulate the advancement of GDPR cases. Ultimately, eliciting a commendation from the EU Ombudsman to monitor all Big Tech cases under the jurisdiction of the Irish Data Protection Commission. This led to today’s commitment encompassing all large-scale cases across the European Union thereby executing ICCL’s proposal since September 2021.
