EU Data Protection Supervisor Issues Guidelines on Generative AI
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has released guidelines on generative AI tools for EU institutions, focusing on data protection obligations under Regulation (EU) 2018/1725. Wojciech Wiewiórowski, EDPS, highlighted the importance of these guidelines in safeguarding individuals’ personal information and privacy.
The guidelines offer practical advice, including the need for data protection impact assessments and how to differentiate data processing involving individuals’ data. As an independent data protection authority, the EDPS aims to ensure compliance with EU data protection laws among EUIs.
The EDPS, as the independent supervisory authority for personal data protection in EU institutions, plays a crucial role in monitoring data processing activities, advising on technological developments affecting privacy, conducting investigations such as data protection audits, and collaborating with other supervisory authorities to ensure consistency in personal data protection.
