EDPB meets with DPAs from EU adequacy countries to strengthen GDPR cooperation
The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) held an online meeting on December 2, 2025, with Commissioners and representatives of Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) from countries and organizations benefiting from EU adequacy decisions. This session was the second of its kind, following the initial meeting in October 2024. Adequacy decisions are essential under EU data protection law, as they allow the free transfer of personal data from the EU to third countries or international organizations that provide an adequate level of data protection.
Currently, 15 countries and one organization have received an EU adequacy decision, including Andorra, Argentina, Canada, Faroe Islands, Guernsey, Israel, Isle of Man, Japan, Jersey, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay, United States, and the European Patent Organisation. The DPAs from these jurisdictions play a vital role in cooperating with the EDPB to promote and maintain high data protection standards globally.
Since the first meeting in October 2024, the EDPB and these DPAs have enhanced their collaboration by exchanging information on advisory activities and sharing experiences related to international data protection enforcement. This ongoing cooperation aims to strengthen multilateral efforts in data protection enforcement and advisory work, ensuring consistent application of data protection rules across borders.
During the December meeting, participants reviewed past activities and discussed upcoming enforcement and advisory priorities. The EDPB Chair, Anu Talus, highlighted the strong commitment from all parties to continue working together to support data protection worldwide. The European Commission remains responsible for adopting adequacy decisions based on a structured process involving proposals, opinions, and approvals from relevant EU bodies.
