Data protection office slaps debt collection agency with €750k fine
The Finnish Data Protection Ombudsman ruled that debt collection company Alektum failed to respond to customers’ requests in a timely manner and fined it 750,000 euros.
The Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman opened an investigation into the company after receiving three complaints from private individuals. The investigation concluded that Alektum had failed to respond to customers’ requests to view their own data in a timely manner.
The Office’s Sanctions Panel said it found that Alektum had not familiarised itself with the requirements of data protection legislation sufficiently, and that its conduct showed disregard for the law.
