UK and U.S. Announce Commitment to “Data Bridge”
On June 8th, 2023, the United Kingdom and the United States announced their intent to forge a data bridge between the two countries. This development, referred to as the UK Extension to the Data Privacy Framework, will allow approved U.S. companies to receive personal data from the UK while adhering to all necessary protection and privacy standards.
To make this possible, both nations agreed that certain bureaucratic restrictions must be streamlined, thus eliminating costly contract clauses that would otherwise add undue burden to businesses. Furthermore, an emphasis was placed on bolstering the rights of citizens while safeguarding the reliability of data flows. Despite the optimistic nature of this agreement, much technical work remains before it can be fully implemented. Ultimately, only time will tell if this ambitious initiative will come to fruition.
