U.S. Waged Secret Legal Battle to Obtain Emails of 4 Times Reporters
The push began in the Trump administration and continued under President Biden, and the Justice Department obtained a gag order to keep it from public view.
With Mr. Trump soon to be out of office, the order was controversial among some inside of the department, according to two people with knowledge of the case. It was seen as unusually aggressive for a case that would likely end in no charges.
