New Data Protection Fee in UK

The United Kingdom has announced plans to introduce a new “Data Protection Fee” to replace the current system of registration for data controllers.

Draft Regulations were laid before Parliament on 20 February 2018 and the Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”), the independent supervisory authority set up to promote and oversee compliance with data protection legislation in the UK, has now produced accompanying guidance. From 25 May 2018, the date the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) comes into force, data controllers will have to pay an annual data protection fee to the ICO, unless they are exempt from doing so.
