MEPs propose strict limits on personal data use in political ads
Online platforms could face much stricter limits on the use of personal data in targeted political advertising under new proposals from the European Parliament’s civil liberties and justice committee (LIBE).
In a draft opinion on the EU’s proposed regulation on political advertising, MEP Anna Donáth, the file’s rapporteur for the LIBE committee, proposed measures that would significantly limit the use of personal data in targeted political advertising.
Under a new provision, targeting techniques that rely on the processing of personal data would be limited to that which had been “expressly provided by the data subject solely for the purposes of political advertising”.
