G7 Data Protection Authorities Focus on AI Ethics and Privacy
From October 9 to 11, 2024, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), Wojciech Wiewiórowski, attended the 4th G7 Data Protection Authorities (DPA) Roundtable in Rome, Italy. Organized by the Italian Data Protection Authority, this annual event gathered privacy and data protection regulators from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Data Protection Board, and the EDPS. The discussions aimed to shape the global dialogue on data protection, particularly in relation to the ethical development of artificial intelligence (AI).
A primary focus of the roundtable was the critical role of data protection authorities in ensuring that AI technologies are developed and utilized responsibly. The participants adopted a statement emphasizing the need to align AI development with established data protection rules. Furthermore, a separate statement was issued regarding AI and children, stressing the urgent need to protect children’s privacy in the face of emerging technologies. This highlights the responsibility of stakeholders to foster trust while safeguarding vulnerable populations.
The G7 DPAs also released a Communiqué that underscored the importance of robust cross-border data transfer mechanisms. These mechanisms are essential for maintaining secure and free data flows internationally. The group reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing cooperation and regulatory collaboration, aiming to strengthen trust and privacy amid rapid technological advancements.
Looking ahead, the DPAs endorsed the Action Plan for 2024/2025, which will continue to focus on key areas such as Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT), emerging technologies, and enforcement cooperation. This plan seeks to align global efforts to promote secure and trustworthy technological progress, further solidifying the role of data protection authorities in the evolving landscape of AI and privacy.
