France ratifies Council of Europe Convention 108+
On the 27th of March 2023, France officially ratified Council of Europe Convention 108+, a protocol which modernizes Convention 108, which was signed by France in 1983. Convention remains vital for safeguarding privacy and data across the globe, since it is open to non-member states of the Council of Europe.
In addition to strengthening rights for data subjects and taking advanced technological developments into account — such as algorithms and AI leading to automated decision-making — the modernization of Convention 108 provides further powers to regulatory authorities while enhancing their collaboration.
The French National Commission for Data Protection (CNIL) has joined in with the work done by the Convention 108 Monitoring Committee, led by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and continues its support of the new Conventional Monitoring Committee established by the Amending Protocol.
At present, France is the 22nd nation to ratify this important amendment, making it a considerable milestone, although still 16 more ratifications are required for its official entry into force.
