EU consumer department to present voluntary pledge over ‘cookie fatigue’
The European Commission’s consumer protection office is launching an ambitious initiative to move away from the constant barrage of cookie banners, which has been causing growing annoyance and ‘cookie fatigue’ among online users.
On March 28th, during the European Consumer Summit, a session dedicated to online advertising and challenges with cookies will be the platform for introducing this pledge – followed by roundtables, inviting consumer groups, publishers, advertisers, and technology companies to join in the discussion.
Didier Reynders, the European Commissioner for Justice & Consumers, is behind this push for a system that no longer forces citizens to accept data processing without fully understanding the implicit implications of their choice. His department is addressing the intersection of consumer protection & data protection, wherein personal data is considered a form of transaction that should be covered under consumer law – violating the doctrine of data protection authorities.
