EDPB’s CSC Releases Biannual Activity Report
The Coordinated Supervision Committee (CSC) of the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has published its biannual activity report for the period from July 2022 to December 2024. Over these two years, the CSC has focused on integrating large-scale EU information technology systems within its scope. Notably, it has taken over the supervision of the upgraded Schengen Information System (SIS) and the Visa Information System (VIS). The Committee has also been preparing for the integration of new systems and the implementation of interoperability regulations.
In its efforts to enhance transparency, the CSC has issued recommendations regarding the Internal Market Information System (IMI) transparency obligations for data controllers. In July 2023, the Committee released a guide titled “Europol’s information systems – a guide for exercising data subjects’ rights,” which covers rights such as access, rectification, erasure, and restriction. Following concerns raised in the 2022 Audit Report by the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) on Europol’s processing of minors’ data, the CSC initiated a coordinated review with input from several Member States.
Looking ahead, the CSC plans to expand its scope to include more EU IT systems and bodies. The Committee will continue to refine its operations to ensure effective supervision. It will support national data protection authorities by clarifying EU and national laws, fostering information exchange, and assisting with joint audits and inspections. The CSC aims to monitor data flows, interactions, and information sharing between EU agencies to maintain high data protection standards.
Background information on the CSC reveals that it is composed of data protection authorities that ensure coordinated supervision of large-scale IT systems and EU bodies. The CSC operates autonomously and establishes its own procedures and methods. It was created within the framework of the EDPB to enhance data protection across the EU.
