Dutch hacker obtained virtually all Austrians’ personal data
A shocking discovery was made on Wednesday as Austrian police revealed that a Dutch hacker had managed to access and even offer up for sale the full name, address, and date of birth of virtually every citizen in Austria.
The hacker, who is believed to be 25 years old and was arrested back in November in an Amsterdam apartment, had posted the data in May 2020 on an online forum, brazenly presenting it as having “the full name, gender, complete address and date of birth of presumably every citizen” in Austria.
Following a thorough investigation by authorities from both countries, officials were able to confirm the authenticity of the information, but did not provide details on how the breach could impact Austrians’ data security. As a result, the statement released about this matter only now so as to not impede those investigations.
