Dutch consumer group filing class-action suit against Google for privacy violations
The Dutch consumer rights organisation, Consumentenbond, and the privacy protection institution, Stichting Bescherming Privacybelangen, are fighting Google to cease their collection and sale of users’ data without their express consent. As the most influential data conglomerate in the world, Google collects an unfathomable expanse of intimate details about individuals through its ubiquitous products and services, disregarding user preferences to avoid tracking. This amalgamated data is then peddled outside of Europe in blatant disregard of European privacy law, exposing Dutch consumers to foreign government surveillance.
This unmitigated violation of privacy rights on a breathtaking scale has transgressed for too long, Dutch consumer advocates say. The gravity of peril associated with Google’s negligent abuse of personal information cannot be understated. With every search query and location tracked, they gain insight into an individual’s behaviors, aspirations, and thoughts; all of which is monetized for their own financial benefit. It is time that this exploitation of consumer privacy comes to an end, insists consumer groups.
