CNIL Unveils AI Strategy Ahead of Paris Summit
The French data protection authority, CNIL, has announced its strategic priorities for the 2025-2028 period, focusing on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) amid its growing use. With the rise of AI technology, CNIL is addressing challenges related to personal data protection, security, and ethics. Marie-Laure Denis, the president of CNIL, highlighted the importance of monitoring algorithms and ensuring individuals can exercise their rights over personal data. The authority plans to collaborate closely with other European data protection agencies to regulate major language models that underpin chatbots and recommendation systems.
In addition to AI governance, CNIL is committed to monitoring algorithmic video surveillance, particularly during significant events like the 2024 Paris Olympics. The authority aims to ensure that these technologies comply with existing legal frameworks to prevent misuse. CNIL’s proactive approach reflects a broader effort to safeguard privacy and uphold data protection standards in an increasingly digital world.
The authority reported a record number of complaints in 2024, totaling 17,193, with nearly 45,000 complaints handled between 2022 and 2024. Most complaints pertain to personal data breaches, indicating rising public concern over privacy issues. Beyond AI, CNIL is also focusing on the protection of minors online and enhancing cybersecurity measures in response to a surge in cyber-attacks targeting various sectors.
As the Paris AI summit approaches in February 2025, regulators worldwide are striving to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. The summit will serve as a platform for experts and decision-makers to discuss regulatory frameworks for AI. Notable attendees include Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and other industry leaders, emphasizing Europe’s ambition to shape the future of artificial intelligence on a global scale.
