EDPS Guidelines on generative AI

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has released guidelines on generative AI tools and personal data protection for EU institutions. These guidelines focus on helping EU entities comply with data protection regulations when utilizing or developing generative AI technologies. The guidelines stress the core principles of data protection and offer concrete examples to assist EU institutions in identifying risks, challenges, and opportunities associated with generative AI systems.

The guidelines issued by the EDPS aim to aid EU institutions in understanding how generative AI tools involve the processing of individuals’ data, when to conduct data protection impact assessments, and offer essential recommendations for ensuring compliance with EU data protection laws. The guidelines underscore the importance of adherence to data protection principles and provide valuable insights for EU institutions to navigate the complexities of generative AI technologies while upholding individuals’ privacy rights.
