The term “dark web” evokes a common set of impressions. Some compare it to the Mos Eisley cantina from Star Wars, a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Others call it the “underbelly” of the internet. That’s no surprise, since it’s well known that nearly anything can be bought on the dark web, from stolen medical records to methamphetamines. But is the dark web the seedy place suggested by these metaphors?
