EDPB Adopts Statement on GDPR Application Report
On December 4, 2024, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) convened for its plenary session and adopted a statement regarding the second report from the European Commission on the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The EDPB expressed its support for the findings presented by both the European Commission and the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA). It emphasized the necessity for legal certainty and coherence in digital legislation as it relates to the GDPR.
The EDPB highlighted its ongoing initiatives aimed at clarifying the enforcement relationship between the GDPR and other significant regulations, including the AI Act, the EU Data Strategy, and the Digital Services Package. These efforts are crucial for ensuring that various regulatory frameworks work harmoniously together, thus enhancing the overall effectiveness of data protection in the EU.
Furthermore, the EDPB announced plans to increase the production of educational content tailored for non-experts, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and other stakeholders. This initiative aims to improve understanding and compliance with GDPR requirements among these groups, which often face challenges in navigating complex data protection laws.
Lastly, the EDPB underscored the urgent need for additional financial and human resources to assist Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) and the EDPB itself in addressing the growing complexities and responsibilities associated with data protection. This call for resources reflects the evolving landscape of data privacy and the increasing demands placed on regulatory bodies.
