Amazon subsidiaries worry data protection advocates
From skimming customers’ Amazon Kindle to noting their preferred groceries on Prime, Amazon has perfected the craft of data tracking. Its groundbreaking algorithms can even be hired out through Amazon Forecast.
But that’s not all: since its inception, the big tech juggernaut has acquired more than 100 other companies, allowing for an even greater degree of consumer insight and a shift towards predictive technology. Take Alexa, for example: when you ask to book movie tickets, it follows up by asking whether you want to make dinner reservations or call a ride-share service.
However, this kind of comprehensive data collection and sharing can create serious privacy issues. With each added Ring doorbell, Echo Smart Speaker and Prime streaming service, the more complete Amazon’s knowledge of its users’ needs become. The company is poised to use such data assets to dominate a wide range of markets, both in the US and beyond.
