Understanding Extended Reality Technology & Data Flows: XR Functions

This article provides an overview of the extended reality (XR) technology and associated privacy and data protection risks.

Analysis conducted by FPF has revealed a concerning trend—sensors that monitor bodily movements can not only form a sound basis for mapping physical environments in XR, but also facilitate digital fingerprinting. By allowing outside parties to easily identify end-users and bystanders, this development creates a worrying risk factor which could rapidly extinguish users’ ability to conceal their identities within these virtual spaces. This lack of anonymity places a viral burden on individuals, threatening to suppress the freedom of self-expression and participation within XR realms due to fears that any actions may garner retribution.
