Navigating digital identity can be challenging given the vast number of stakeholders and components that come into play to deliver a flawless customer experience. Even though privacy is not always the ultimate goal, Self-sovereign Identity (SSI) technology offers the potential of boosting the security of digital identities as it provides users with control over their own identifiers and enables them to share their data at their discretion – in line with the principles of Data Minimization and Purpose Limitation.
Despite this, guaranteeing privacy by design and responsibility across every element of a digital identity system that also complies with various legal and regulatory privacy mandates remains a formidable task. To progress further down SSI’s path, close public-private partnerships need to be developed to construct infrastructure and educate both organizations and consumers on SSI’s capabilities and practical applications.
