A Preliminary Opinion on data protection and scientific research

The EDPS considers that respect for personal data is wholly compatible with responsible research. Data protection is intended to serve as a safety net for individuals whose data are needed to support science: personal data enable better understanding of diseases, the development of new therapies and generally improvement of quality of life10.

The concept of research, however, is very broad. This Preliminary Opinion builds on the work of the EDPB and its predecessor the Article 29 Working Party to promote a more informed discussion between the research and data protection communities.
