Data Protection Day 2023
Data Protection Day is here! Data Protection Day is an internationally recognized day that serves to raise awareness of data privacy rights and promote good data protection practices.
It was first celebrated on January 28, 2007 in Europe, and later expanded to the rest of the world in January 2008. Data Protection Day is an annual celebration that takes place on January 28th to commemorate the adoption of the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 – the first legal instrument of its kind for the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data.
The first Data Protection Day event was held in Brussels, Belgium and featured a speech from Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor at the time. Since then, various activities have been organized around the world each year to celebrate this important occasion. These activities include workshops, seminars and lectures aimed at educating people about their data protection rights and how to protect their personal information while using the internet or other digital platforms.
Since its inception, Data Protection Day has grown in importance as technology has become ever-present in our daily lives. With the spread of digital technology comes new opportunities but also new threats when it comes to how our personal data is used, shared and stored. Data protection day serves to remind us of the need for responsible handling of personal data. It was created to raise awareness of data protection and privacy issues related to the collection, storage, use and dissemination of personal information.
